Five New Indonesian Dominican Priests Ordained in Jakarta on the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter

Jakarta, Indonesia – February 22, 2025 – A momentous occasion for the Dominican Order in Indonesia unfolded on the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter as five Indonesian Dominican brothers were ordained to the priesthood at Gereja Santa Helena, Paroki Curug, Tangerang, Banten, Jakarta, Indonesia. The ordination took place at 9:00 AM (WIB) (10:00 AM PST) and was presided over by His Eminence, Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Jakarta.

The newly ordained Dominican priests—Fr. Aris Kung, OP, Fr. Samuel Sonny Gunawan, OP, Fr. Johnny Luntungan, OP, Fr. Dominico Xaverio Budoyo Setiawan, OP, and Fr. Tommy Riezky Tiyanto, OP—belong to the Dominican Province of the Philippines, which continues its mission of preaching and evangelization in Indonesia, particularly in Surabaya and Pontianak. .

The ordination Mass was attended by a great number of Dominican friars from the Philippines, along with Dominican friars and sisters, clergy, family members, and the faithful, who gathered in great numbers to celebrate the occasion. The solemn liturgy was enriched with traditional Indonesian elements, reflecting the vibrant faith and culture of the local Church.

Following the ordination, the newly ordained priests expressed their gratitude to God, their families, and the Dominican community for their unwavering support throughout their journey. “

With these new priests, the Order continues its commitment to preaching, education, and pastoral service in Indonesia. This ordination is truly an important milestone for the Dominican ministry in Indonesia, signifying a strong and growing presence of the Order in the region.
