Triduum in Honor of our Holy Father, St. Dominic de Guzman
The brethren of Santo Domingo Convent, the Mother Convent of the Dominican Province of the Philippines, together with the brethren of Bahay Dominiko and the lay faithful, gathered for three days of prayer and reflection in preparation for the Solemnity of Our Holy Father St. Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers. Throughout the Triduum, the life and mission of St. Dominic were reflected upon through three of his traditional titles: Light of the Church, Daystar of the World, and Preacher of Grace.
On the first day of the Triduum, Br. Antonius Widhi Pramudianto, OP reflected on St. Dominic as the “Light of the Church.” He reminded the faithful that honoring St. Dominic cannot end with prayers and devotions offered in his name. Those who follow him are called above all to imitate his example—to allow the light received from Christ to transform their own lives and, through them, illuminate the lives of others.
On the second day, Br. John Rheed M. Caturza, OP preached on St. Dominic as the “Daystar of the World.” He emphasized that St. Dominic never sought to outshine Christ, but instead reflected Jesus, the true source of light. In the same way, Dominicans and all who share in the Dominican spirit are called not to seek recognition or fame, but to become instruments through whom the light of Christ reaches others in every word and deed.
The Triduum concluded with Br. Leonito Mateo, OP reflecting on St. Dominic as the “Preacher of Grace.” He recalled how everything St. Dominic received from the Lord—his light, truth, patience, chastity, wisdom, and prayer—was never kept for himself but became grace shared with others. At the heart of Dominic’s preaching was Jesus Christ Himself, the embodiment and source of all grace. Those who follow St. Dominic are therefore called continually to seek this grace, so that their preaching and their lives may become gifts freely shared in the service of others.
Through these three days of prayer and reflection, the Triduum presented a single portrait of the holy founder: St. Dominic received the light of Christ, reflected that light to the world, and shared the grace he had received through preaching. As the Dominican Family celebrates his solemn feast, may his example renew in us the desire to seek the Truth, to live by the grace of Christ, and to proclaim the Gospel through our words and our lives.
