Santa Rosa, Philippines – January 16, 2025 – Gathered as the 13th Provincial Chapter, the Capitulars reelected Br. Filemon I. dela Cruz Jr., OP, as Prior Provincial for a second four-year term. The election was held on January 16, 2025, in UST Santa Rosa, Laguna (Philippines), and was confirmed by the Master of the Order on January 16, 2025. Br. dela Cruz accepted his reelection on the same day.
ather Deng, as he is fondly called, was born on January 19, 1964, in Manila. He was vested with the Dominican Habit on May 11, 1983, and made his Simple Profession on May 11, 1984. He professed his Solemn Vows on May 11, 1987. He was ordained as a priest on April 30, 1992.
He studied in Espiritu Santo Parochial School in Santa Cruz, Manila. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the Philippine Dominican Center of Institutional Studies (PDCIS) in 1986 and completed his Theological Studies in 1991 at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila. He finished his Master’s Degree in Theology in 2006 at the same University.
Brother dela Cruz Jr. is known for formation works: He was a Master of Students from 1992 to 1996 and a Master of Novices from 1996 to 2000. He was also the Provincial Promoter of the Priestly Fraternities of Saint Dominic from 2012 to 2014, Provincial Councilor from 2012 to 2016, Socius of the Prior Provincial from 2014 to 2016, Campus Minister and Administrator at the University of Santo Tomas from 2001 to 2017, and Superior of the Dominican community of the Rumah Santo Tomas in Surabaya, Indonesia, from 2017 to 2020.
In his first term as Prior Provincial from 2021 to 2025, he guided and journeyed with his brothers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Now, he will guide his brothers for four fresh years, filled with hope, providentially beginning in the Jubilee Year of Hope 2025.
