Dominicans and Franciscans celebrate the Solemnity of St. Dominic de Guzman

In keeping with a centuries-old tradition, friars from the various Franciscan Orders joined the Dominicans to celebrate the Solemnity of St. Dominic de Guzman at the Santo Domingo Church and National Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary – La Naval de Manila.

According to tradition, whenever either Order celebrates the feast of its respective founder—St. Dominic or St. Francis—they exchange visits to celebrate the Holy Mass. This practice reflects the deep fraternal bond between the two Orders, a friendship originating from the meeting of St. Dominic and St. Francis in Rome in 1216 while seeking papal approval for their respective communities.

The solemn evening liturgy was presided over by the main celebrant, Very Rev. Fr. Lino Gregorio V. Redoblado, OFM, Minister Provincial of the Franciscan Province of San Pedro Bautista. Concelebrating the Mass were Very Rev. Fr. Edgar S. Martinez, OFMCap., Provincial Minister of the Capuchin Franciscans of the Philippines; Very Rev. Fr. Dennis M. Vargas, OFMConv., Provincial Custos of the Franciscan Conventuals of the Philippines; and Very Rev. Fr. Filemon I. Dela Cruz, Jr., OP, Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of the Philippines. Members from across the broader Dominican family were also in attendance, including religious sisters, members of the priestly fraternities, and the Dominican Laity.

This gathering serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of St. Dominic. Though he left no written copies of his sermons, his true legacy lives on through the vibrant family of men and women gathered in his name, the enduring fruits of his life and preaching.
